Perhaps things have changed, but, when I used to use NTE substitutes, I never had a bad one out off the box and none of them failed after being installed. Then again, this was around 10 years ago and earlier. I used them in the ’70s. It was not that they were bad, it is that thay are a generic replacement for many parts. Some circuits were very specific on the characteristics of the part.
It was rare but does happen. Class A amps were one case. I think it ran right at the limit of current. The pre drivers, 2SC and 2SA are proving to be even more elusive than the drivers! Repairing a Sansui G Shorted outputs, shorted drivers and pre drivers. Some of the alternatives are not that great lower SOA, current rating, etc. Supposedly have many of each in stock, and cheap.
NTE has a horrid reputation among repair circles and I like to avoid it. I can’t even find a datasheet for 2SC on the web. Octopart says no datasheet found and they ask to submit a quote request.
Comes up not found at my regular suppliers. Forward current transfer ratio hFEmin: All of these parts are shorted, so someone attempted repair using substitute parts and the parts failed again.
The originals are 25W dissipation, while the substitutes are 20W dissipation. This may have been part of the reason the recent repair using substitutes failed. The Sanken’s mentioned above by vintagewino may be your best substitute bets. Just did a search on digikey with a few additional cases that should mount onto a TO heatsink, and not very many results, and of those many are BU’s, which are switching transistors and I assume it’s not what you’re after.

It’s rare to find any Sankens that are NOT counterfeit parts these days. The risk of having one fail and take out a half dozen expensive output transistors, plus devices on the driver board, seems too risky.
Darasheet fT is lower than original, but that should not present a problem. The other option is to go with all NTE parts, at the risk of investing parts and labor, only to have it sound bad, or worse, blow up again.
Personally, I’d tend to think that the chances of getting genuine parts from Digikey is pretty good. Class A is the most inefficient, so dattasheet, the constant power dissipation will shorten the life, especially if the substitute has a lower Pd.
One circuit I worked on used to use an MJ Would typically last a year. Went to an MJ, and they lasted a tad over 10 years. In audio applications, the fT won’t make a difference. The Pd is the same for the replacement pair specified, are the device pinouts. The substitute parts have a higher Ic, as well.
I think the op simply wants the exact same components. And, if they’re made of unobtainium, yes, good luck. Yeah, I’ve seen the 6.
A little too close for comfort on the spec. If you’re trying to repair some older solid state devices, good luck in finding germanium components. They really ARE made of unobtainium! That was troublesome even 30 years ago! Parts Express has the NTE parts. Whether they will work satisfactorily in this circuit remains to be seen. My biggest concern is having the amplifier come back a month later because the parts didn’t last.
So it is up to the characteristics being audio-friendly. None of which give me a whole lot of peace of mind though. Something in the back of my mind tells me I should have firmly turned down this job. I told him it’s not worth more than a grand in non-working condition, but he was unable to negotiate cheaper and badly wants this receiver. I’m not comfortable with this situation, but he’s a regular customer and I don’t want any bad blood for refusing to work with him on this one.
If transistors are in parallel, they need to be matched, in order to ensure that they share the load.

Were the replacements matched? If not, this could be a reason why the original repair only lasted a month.
But yes, the hFE should be close for each group. The finals, though, is not where he allegedly has the problem. The output transistors appear to be original Sanken RETs. There is evidence that the Darlington pairs had been replaced with substitutes fresh solder, part numbers differ from schema. Every rebuild of this magnitude comes with a mandatory recap. Also the MV diodes get replaced, as these are notorious for failing and turning on both halves of the output stage simultaneously.
I purchased transistors from Mouser and spend an hour grading and marking them all. I managed to get 32 devices that matched to my tolerance.

There are people that argue that matching isn’t critical if emitter resistors are employed. I don’t share that opinion. The O and Y are grades, as another person mentioned above.
Due to the cost of the parts involved and the uncertainty that substitutes will work with long term reliability, I am reluctant to take on the project. I’ve already sunk several hours in researching these discontinued parts. It’s like that feeling when you step into a mud puddle and discover it is much deeper than it looked and you find yourself up to your knees in mud and think “well, I may as well keep going.

I’ve seen that with 6. Replacing them with 10V caps solved the issues. Of course transistors have many more crucial parameters than caps, and sometimes one has to compromise when the original part is made of unobtainium.
