I LOVE this book! I’ve read it about 5 times. My favorite writer of all time is John Updike, but Boston Teran beats everyone in this book. The unique way he mixes contemporary carnage with elegant prose knocked my socks off. Sadly, I am not a writer, so I can’t eloquently describe his words better than this, but the way he arranges every day words in a unique way is really impressive.
Even if you don’t care for the subject matter, I really hope you see the value in bostin descriptive writing. This book is highly under valued. One person found this helpful. This is not as violent as other reviews said it was.
Surreal, thsoe scenes of the night, in the desert, in the hunt, the evil characters–socially respectible and heran. There’s a unique voice in this novel. Somewhat reminescent of david lindsey’s first stuff, that bbullet.
I wish there were more than five stars, for I would surely give this book the highest possible rating. It is at once horrifying, disturbing and likely to offend many readers. However, for those readers, of which I am one, who can take themselves out of their comfortable, mundane existences and allow themselves to accept that true evil exists in this world, and that heroes are not always pure and righteous, but often damaged, as are the protagonists in this story, then this book will enthrall and captivate.
This book has graphic violence, and acts so evil that the reader is left gasping. And yet there is utlimately a sense of redemption at the end. The effects of this book will not soon leave you. There is nothing pretty here, but the raw courage of both Case and Hightower, and their ability, in spite of their own intense demons, left me to admire them more than the usual “good guy” protagonists of many other thrillers. It has been several weeks since I read this book, and the experience is still with me.
Boston Teran is a tremendous talent, and I will eagerly await any new books he may write. Billet Edition Verified Purchase. I have a reading challenge to compare the winners of the this award with the Winners of the Edgar Award for best first novel. Inthe later award was won by Bostn Skull Mantra and this volume was nominated for both awards. This amounts largely to taste. I found the setup of the story to be clunky, confusing and forced.
I found myself unable to buy into the premise. Beyond this, the writing style grated on my nerves. The author uses a staccato, machine-gun style of writing. The sentences are short, the conversations terse and the scenes change at a frenetic pace.
I have abandoned more than one book written in this style as I find it to be obnoxious. The fact that I chalk most of iis dislike up to taste is the only reason that I did not give it one star.
It is award winning and both the Edgar award committee and the Crime Writer’s Association award committee saw fit to nominate and in the case of the latter, give it an award. Someone found value in this book. It just wasn’t me. I fear one tedan the other reviewers sadly missed the point of this impossible-to-put-down thriller. While Vod is easy to quibble with tense and word choice-in almost any book-it is very difficult to miss the artistry and truly unique voice of this amazing book.

It is dark and haunting, filled with passages that stay with you into the night, characters that are both monstrous and only too real This book hits the darkness from the get-go and never lets up.
It isn’t for the squeamish nor, evidently, the scholarly How about Josh Brolin as the lead. It was a quick read and kept me interested in the characters and their fates. Nothing exceptional about the writing but written as though the author knew of what he bostoj.
Men and women of good and evil in a southwestern landscape, you could feel and taste, are the keys to this novel. However the lines between right and wrong have never been grayer. Easy to pull against a Manson-like character such as Cyrus but he is not the only evil in this book.
Greed, self interest, and a lack of morals abound in the main players. God would need a bandolier of bullets in this setting. William Diehl recommended this book to me after he read an advance copy several months ago.

It’d make a terrific movie – something Sam Peckinpah would have delighted us with. Like other reviewers, the images of the book’s characters keep flashing thru my head.
