Revisions include, but are not limited to, the addition of “selected readings” sections, updated examples, new discussion on the creative nature of neologisms, and the use of IPA as the primary transcription system throughout.
This edition also includes an account of the patterns of occurrence of reduced vowels in English. An understanding of these patterns enables the reader to write a phonemic transcription of any English word.

Sep 15, Macalester Linguistics added it Shelves: This is now the fourth introduction to linguistics textbook I’ve tried and frankly it’s the most disappointing of all four – but I’ve already ordered it for the class so it’s too late to change it. It’s long, dry and hard, and also out of date in parts.
I will have to supplement it with readings that I hope will go down a bit easier. There are moments here and there that shine through, and I did like the last chapter, on language and the brain, which was written by a different author.

Great academic introduction to the study of linguistics. A few years ago I began studying Koine Greek and picked up this book to learn a little more about the field of Linguistics. Since then I have begun to acquire a taste for the field.
